The Green Mortgage Advice Initiative (GMAI) is a cross-industry project led by the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI).

It started life as the Mortgage Climate Action Group (MCAG) – which was a collaboration between Legal & General, Sesame Bankhall Group and SimplyBiz Mortgages – and these founders were joined by Home Loan Partnership, Mortgage Intelligence, PRIMIS, Openwork, and Paradigm.

The group officially became an AMI initiative in 2023, and now we have a Steering committee and volunteer taskforce made up of nearly 60 people from firms working in and alongside the mortgage sector – including lenders, surveyors, compliance specialists and more.

The GMAI is intended to act as a source of support for intermediaries, helping them to understand and address green issues when dealing with mortgage applications, and ensuring that advisers’ interests are represented among lenders, regulators, trade bodies and government institutions.

But it’s also much broader than that. We know climate change and the green agenda will have big implications for our sector, but we also know it’s too big for any individual firm to solve. So this is really about coming together as an industry to tackle the climate crisis: where we leave our individual commercial interests at the door, and work together to play “country not club”.
